Abstract

Digital games such as video games or computer games have been widely reported in research to have a positive impact on students' cognitive and non-cognitive aspects. This literature review (a) investigates the current trend of digital game-based learning by reviewing research studies on the use of digital game-based learning in mathematics learning (b) describes how digital games in mathematics learning can improve problem solving skills, and (c) discusses future directions for researching problem solving in mathematics learning by integrating digital game technology. In total, 87 studies were reviewed. However, only 30 studies were identified as empirical research and systematically analyzed to investigate current research trends. From the results of this literature review, there were many studies that used and implemented digital game-based mathematics learning and had an impact on improving problem-solving skills such as organizing strategies, facing challenges, and reflecting after completing missions. This literature review will contribute to the research community interested in using digital game-based learning in mathematics learning that focuses on problem-solving skills
